This 8 lesson course is designed to introduce students to the field of religious epistemology, with a focus on its connections with the great intellectual traditions of Sunni Islam. Students will explore what in general religious epistemology is and why it is relevant and important for theology and philosophy today - especially in da’wa. They will delve into the specifics of Islamic epistemology that include learning about the Qur’anic perspective on knowledge, its knowledge vocabulary, aims and valid source; the role of Prophet Muhammad as a paradigm exemplar of a knower; how knowledge is authorised, maintained and constructed within specific conditions of a community of knowers; the relationship between faith and reason in Islam and some new and emerging views by contemporary Muslim scholars. Students will also explore how Islamic scholars and thinkers throughout the pre-modern period explained the relationship between natural theology and epistemology and the role of reason, intuition or conscience in shaping knowledge of God.
