This course will aim to provide students a comprehensive understanding on matters relating to fasting together with proofs from the Hanafi school.
About the Text
Maraqi 'l-Sa'adat
Written by the eminent 11th century Hanafi scholar, Abu ’l-Ikhlas al-Shurunbulali, Maraqi 'l-Sa'adat (Ascent to Felicity) is a concise yet comprehensive primer in creed and jurisprudence.
It spans all five pillars of Islam, as well as the topics of slaughtering, ritual sacrifice, and hunting.
For this course, we will cover the section on fasting (sawm):
- The intention of fasting
- The crescent moon
- Things that invalidate the fast
- Those that require makeup as well as expiation
- Those that require a makeup without expiation
- Those that require nothing and are not disliked
- Those that require nothing yet are disliked
- Exemption from fasting
- Spiritual retreat in the mosque (i’tikaf)
